The third installment of the classic and Iconic first person shooter, Doom
Doom 3, by Id Software and produced by Activation, is a first person shooter that has the player fighting Demons and Scientific abominations on Mars. No Joke! It is somehow able to pull off this ridiculous combination, along with absurd enemies, in the most serious way possible, managing the best executed horror game of 2004. Praised for its graphics, atmosphere and design, Doom 3 continues on the rich history of the series and lives up to expectations. Along with a level based and story driven single player mode, players are also free to several multi player game modes that will have you battling friends or strangers in a free for all death match.
Doom 3 is all about scouring a maze of Martian laboratory hallways in search of demons to shoot at with a variety of weapons. During this search expect things to skitter, crawl and jump out at you in the most classic shock horror techniques. You can fight these horrors with everything from your fists, to machine guns to plasma guns and rocket launchers. Every gun has a limited number of charges / shots and ammunition has to be discovered around the map to replenish magazines. Likewise, health and armor can be found and used, adding to the player's health bar. Control is smooth but straight forward. Strafing is key, as there isn't a duck or take cover option. Conserving ammo is important, as enemies can appear at any moment and you don't want to be left without the firepower to fight them.
Doom 3 is all about ambient setting and shock horror, doing it's best to make the player as jumpy as possible before throwing deadly enemies in their face. Shadows and poor lightning make the map locations dirty and frightening. The sound is suitably spooky, filled with the screams of the dying and abruptly loud noises designed to scare the player. The overall effect works amazing and will have players sitting on the edge of their seats waiting for the next thing to pop out and scare them. This is a fantastic game to play in the dark, if that's your thing.
- Very atmospheric and well executed horror / FPS game
- Decent story for a FPS
- Graphics have held up, even after a decade
- Lack of actions like duck and take cover shows this game's age
- Not for the faint of heart, this game is scary!
